Angry scuffles at funeral of dissident republican leader Ruairi O Bradaigh (Irish Independent)
There were angry scuffles at St Comans graveyard in Roscommon town today, at the funeral of veteran dissident republican leader Ruairi O’Bradaigh.
The scuffles arose after the O’Bradaigh family and a ‘color party’ of 20 brought the coffin to the grave which was ringed by fourteen gardai.
Some mourners then clashed briefly with members of the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) and gardai in riot gear shortly after 1.45 am.
Upwards on 1,800 mourners heard former Sinn President and ex IRA chief of staff O’Bradaigh described as a man for all seasons in a bi-lingual mass in St Comans Cathedral in Roscommon.
Ruairi O’Bradaigh was 80.
He is survived by his wife Patsy, Matt, Ruairi Og, Deirdre, Conchur, Eithne, Colm and brother Sean.
