Suspected gun found in dissident search (UTV)

A suspected firearm has been recovered during a police search in east Belfast in connection with dissident republican activity.

A number of homes were evacuated during the security alert at Mountforde Drive on Wednesday afternoon.

Army bomb experts examined the weapon at the scene.

It has been taken away for forensic examination.

Alliance Belfast councillor Maire Hendron has praised the actions of police officers.

“There is now one less gun on our streets today. The community does not want these weapons on our streets and is thankful for the actions of the Police.

“We must all show our support for the Police and the rule of law by passing on information that can lead to more weapons being taken off our streets,” she added.
