A suspicious package was discovered in the Derry Road area of Co Tyrone on Monday evening.
A number of homes and offices were evacuated as amy bomb experts examined the package, which was later declared a hoax.
A 35-year-old was arrested in Omagh on Tuesday on suspicion of placing an article at the local police station with intent to induce others to believe it was likely to explode or ignite.
He is currently assisting police with their enquiries.
West Tyrone Ulster Unionist MLA Ross Hussey condemned those responsible for the alert.
“The people of Omagh, like the rest of Northern Ireland, have suffered more than enough in the past and have no desire to return there.
“They utterly reject anyone who would seek to use violence or the threat of violence and simply want to live their lives and bring up their families in peace,” he said.
