DERRY. BOMBE VERNICE CONTRO UN CENTRO COMUNITARIO
Derry community centre paintbombed (UTV)
A community centre in the Creggan area of Derry has been paintbombed and vandalised overnight.
A number of paintbombs were thrown at the outside of the Creggan Healthy Living Centre, windows were broken and graffiti was also scrawled on the walls.
Dissident republicans are being blamed for carrying out the attack on the centre which houses a number of community projects.
The incident comes a week after a PSNI Chief Superintendent Stephen Martin was invited to the centre to attend a meeting about the local community’s concerns over policing in the area.
Séamus Heaney, project director, said the attack “served no purpose.”
The community worker, whose brother Denis was shot dead by the British Army in 1978, told UTV that he wanted to bring “good news stories into Creggan – not this stuff.”
He said he was in no doubt that the vandals are from the area.
“I think the people that are doing this want to drag us back into the violence of the past. Those were dark and terrible days for the people living in this community.”
“We don’t want to go back there.”
Mr Heaney said he wanted to enter into dialogue with dissident Republicans.
Sinn Féin‘s Raymond McCartney MLA said the perpetrators are “fascists” who will feel the wrath of Creggan community.
SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan has condemned those responsible.
The SDLP Health spokesperson said: “This is a futile and destructive act which has sickened people in this community.
“Just last week we celebrated the 10th birthday of this fantastic facility which plays a vital role in improving the lives of people here.
“This attack will not deter the delivery of the wide range of programmes which this centre provides which help educate and empower the people of Creggan and beyond.”
A PSNI spokesperson said that they are investigating a report of criminal damage which occurred sometime overnight at a youth centre in the Central Drive area of the city.
