Lettera di un membro anonimo dell’Esecutivo in difesa di Gerry McGeough

Gerry McGeough, 52enne ex membro dell’IRA, ha assistito a braccia conserte all’udienza di quest’oggi presso la Belfast Crown Court. Durante la seduta odierna, l’avvocato della difesa ha rivelato che un membro anomino del Northern Ireland Executive ha scritto una lettera per dire che McGeough non rappresenta una minaccia al processo di pace nel Nord Irlanda.
Il repubblicano è attualmente detenuto presso il carcere di Maghaberry, con l’accusa di tentato omicidio di Sammy Brush avvenuto nel 1981 e per possesso di armi.
La sentenza verrà emessa la prossima settimana.

An unnamed member of the Northern Ireland Executive has supplied a reference for Gerry McGeough ahead of his sentencing.
The former IRA member was found guilty in February of the attempted murder of an off-duty UDR soldier 30 years ago.
Sammy Brush, a former postman, was shot while delivering letters in 1981.
At Belfast Crown Court, a defence barrister said the executive member had written to say that McGeough posed no threat whatsoever to the peace process.
McGeough, who had his arms folded throughout Friday’s proceedings, appeared via video link from Maghaberry prison.
The 52-year-old was also convicted of possessing firearms with intent and holding IRA membership in relation to the attack.
A bullet-proof jacket saved Mr Brush’s life and he returned fire with his own personal protection pistol, wounding McGeough.
McGeough, of Carrycastle Road in Gortmerron, Dungannon, will be sentenced next week.
