Loyalists ‘planted Carnlough bomb’ (UTV)
A splinter loyalist terror group has admitted it planted a pipe bomb in Carnlough which was disarmed on Wednesday night.
In a call to a Belfast newspaper, the Loyalist Action Force said they were responsible for the device, which was left in a garden in the Ballymena Road area of the village.
Police confirmed the claim had been received.
Larne Mayor Andy Wilson, speaking after a separate security alert in his town, said a man was “fortunate to be alive” after handling the viable device in Carnlough.
Branding those behind the attack “callous and dangerous cowards”, the UUP councillor added: “It is clear there are still terrorists lurking in the shadows, even in areas which have been peaceful in the past.”
The suspicious device found in the Roddens area of Larne was later found to be a hoax. Residents evacuated during the alert have been allowed to return home.
At this stage, police do not believe the two incidents are linked.
