Un sacerdote di Derry condanna durante una messa l’attacco repubblicano ai danni di uno dei suoi parrocchiani reo di crimini a sfondo sessuale

Padre Dermott Harkin ha approfittato dell’omelia durante la messa celebrata la scorsa domenica in St Brigid’s Church, per condannare i responsabili dell’attacco paramilitare la cui vittima designata è stata uno dei suoi parrocchiani condannato per reati a sfondo sessuale. L’uomo è stato aggredito, picchiato ed ha subito ferite da arma da fuoco ad entrambe le gambe. La ‘punizione’ è avvenuta nell’area di Carnhill.
L’attacco “non può essere tollerato, non è giusto e non riflette i sentimenti della stragrande maggioranza delle persone di questa zona. Ho detto che nessuno ha il diritto di prendere la legge nelle proprie  mani, che ogni violenza è sbagliata, che tutte le forme di abuso e di crudeltà inflitte a un essere umano sono contro la legge di Dio e un insulto ad una buona e decente comunità di persone”, ha dichiarato Padre Harkin durante la sua orazione nella quale hanno trovato posto anche parole di elogio per la popolazione di Carnhill che vuole guardare avanti.
“La gente è indignata per  quanto successo a questo signore e non vuole  in alcun modo essere associata a questa crudeltà e non vuole avere nulla a che fare con essa. La gente ha abbandonato questo tipo di attività di “Vigilante”, la gente vuole la pace. Una volta che rinunciamo alle corrette procedure di legge, ci ritroviamo di nuovo nella giungla”

A priest in Londonderry has used Mass to attack the republican gunmen believed to be responsible for shooting one of his parishioners.
Fr Dermott Harkin made his remarks at St Brigid’s Church on Sunday.
The victim, a convicted sex offender, was beaten and then shot in the legs in the Carnhill area.
Fr Harkin said the attack was “not to be tolerated, it’s not right and it doesn’t reflect the feelings of the vast majority of people in this area”.
He added: “I said that no-one has the right to take the law into their own hands, that all violence is wrong that all forms of abuse and cruelty meted out to any human being is against God’s law and an insult to a good and decent community of people.”
The priest said he got a very positive reaction from his parishioners.
“People were outraged by what had happened to this gentleman and don’t want in any way to be associated with the cruelty of it and anything to do with it,” he said.
“People have moved on from this kind of vigilante type activity, people want peace.
“Once we give up the proper procedures of law, we’re back in the jungle”
