Operazione nell’ambito di indagine in materia di riqualificazione dell’area di Nelson Street

Le perquisizioni avvenute presso l’abitazione a South Belfast e l’ufficio di Barry Gilligan, presidente del Policing Board, sono parte di una più ampia indagine nell’ambito del progetto di riqualificazione dell’area di Nelson Street, Belfast, guidata da 5 mesi dal reparto ‘criminalità organizzata’ della PSNI.
Rimossi dai locali numerosi elementi di prova, ma la PSNI tiene la bocca cucita.
“Sono in corso indagini della polizia e non possiamo commentare i dettagli dell’inchiesta”, risponde a chi chiede sia Gilligan sia stato interrogato.
Gli investigatori sono stati chiamati ad intervenire dal Northern Ireland Housing Executive in riferimento ad un sito di proprietà di un’azienda chiamata Big Picture Developments, di cui Barry Gilligan risulta essere uno dei direttori.
Partendo dal presupposto che “Ogni individuo ha diritto alla presunzione di innocenza e pur non essendoci alcun indizio di irregolarità da parte di Barry Gilligan, è chiaro anche il fatto che una perquisizione di un ufficio presso il quartier generale del Policing Board è una questione di pubblico interesse” Basil McCrea, membro del Policing Board, auspica che Gilligan mantenga il proprio ruolo soprattutto in questo momento in cui l’incertezza regna sovrana: “E ‘importante che il Policing Board rimanga concentrato e pronto ad affrontare le proprie responsabilità istituzionali”.
In un comunicato, Gilligan ha tenuto a sottolineare che: “I o e i miei colleghi abbia fatto, e metteremo, noi stessi e i files aziendali, totalmente a disposizione della PSNI per chiarire questioni con la massima rapidità possibile, fiducioso che saremo completamente scagionati.
“A tale scopo, incontrerò volontariamente la PSNI nei prossimi giorni, nel momento più consono ad entrambo le parti.”
“Ma alla luce della recente operazione del PSNI, la mia condizione delle mie coronarie (Gilligan ha subito un’operazione al cuore ad inizio anno) e della dignità della carica di Presidente del Northern Ireland Policing Board, sento di non dover tornare al ruolo in questo momento,”

The office and home of Policing Board chairman Barry Gilligan have been searched as part of a police investigation into a Belfast land deal.
A number of unspecified items were taken from his home in south Belfast, as well as his office at the Board’s headquarters.
Mr Gilligan, a developer and a member of the Board which was established as part of the police reforms introduced in the aftermath of the Good Friday peace agreement, has been away from his office on health grounds since February this year after undergoing major heart surgery.
But it is believed he planned to return.
In a statement police said: “Searches have been conducted in Belfast as part of an investigation into matters concerning development land at Nelson St.
“A number of items have been removed for examination from an office and a house. Police inquiries are continuing.”
Asked if Mr Gilligan had been questioned, a spokesperson for the Police Service of Northern Ireland said: “Police inquiries are ongoing and we cannot comment on details of the investigation.”
The probe by the police organised crime branch started five months ago.
Detectives were called in by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive to investigate its role at the site which is owned by a company called Big Picture Developments which list Mr Gilligan as one of its directors.
Meanwhile, UUP Policing Board member Basil McCrea insists the body’s focus “must remain on its statutory remit” despite the ongoing investigation involving Mr Gilligan.
He said: “Everyone is entitled to the presumption of innocence and whilst there is no suggestion of impropriety on the part of Barry Gilligan, it is clear that the fact of a PSNI search on Policing Board premises is a matter of public interest. Quite simply, people are watching these proceedings and it is vital that the Board recognises the implications of this situation.
“Many significant issues are facing the Northern Ireland Policing Board at present, not least the finances of the PSNI and an ever worsening security situation. It is important that the Board remains focused and poised to address its statutory responsibilities.”
He added: “It is imperative that the good work of the Policing Board is allowed to continue, unhampered by this investigation.”
