IRA Dissidents ‘Raiding ATMs’ (4 NI)
The recent spate of cross-border ATM raids have been linked to republican dissidents by those investigating the thefts.
Gardaí and the PSNI are continuing investigations on both sides of the border into the latest automated teller machine (ATM) raids at the weekend in Newry and Augher in Co Tyrone.
The robberies followed similar raids in at Keady, Co Armagh, and Templepatrick, Co Antrim. Senior detectives on both sides of the Border have not ruled out terrorist links.
During both incidents mechanical diggers were used to remove the machines from their housing, put on a truck or van and taken from the scene.
Detectives have revealed they believe there is a cross-border link in the ongoing raids to a gang of republican dissidents.
Today, detectives in Newry are investigating the attempted theft of an ATM machine from a filling station on the Green Road in Bessbrook.
The incident was reported to police shortly before 7am on Sunday morning, 13 December. A digger was used to ram the side of the building in an attempt to remove the machine. Damage was caused to the wall however the ATM was not removed.
Police found a Caterpillar digger with its engine still running and a Nissan flatbed, both abandoned by the thieves.
Investigations are ongoing and police are appealing to anyone who was on the Green Road or the Camlough Road between 6am and 7am on Sunday morning.
Meanwhile, the ATM units which were taken in the latest raid in Co Cavan had special tracker devices, but it is believed links with the devices were ‘lost’ a short time after the robbery.
A search continued yesterday across a wide area of counties Cavan and Monaghan. The Garda support unit backed up mobile Garda patrols on the ground for a time, and checkpoints were in operation on several cross-Border routes.
Similar raids this year included the theft of an ATM from the wall of a service station in Co Wexford in July. In June, raiders used mechanical diggers to remove ATMs in separate incidents in Co Kilkenny and Co Meath.
