Il Repubblican Sinn Fein ha emesso nei giorni scorsi un comunicato stampa denunciando  ripetuti maltrattamenti a carico dei prigionieri repubblicani nel carcere di Maghaberry.

Domenica scorsa, un prigioniero repubblicano nella prigione di Maghaberry  (Brian McAllister) si è lussato una spalla. Tale era il dolore, che ha chiesto assistenza medica. Tuttavia, tale richiesta è stata inizialmente respinta. Il prigioniero è stato messo a sedere su una sedia a rotelle e portato in una stanza. Egli è rimasto là per circa un’ora ed è stato avvertito che, se avesse continuato a lamentarsi sarebbe arrivata una squadra di ‘perquisizione’ (search squad) ad ‘occuparsi’ di lui.
Alla fine,un medico è arrivato. Tuttavia il dottore incaricato di occuparsi di lui, era un oculista e quindi non è stato in grado di aiutarlo. Dopo altre tre ore è stato trasportato all’ospedale di Belfast.
Un altro prigioniero (Damian McKenna) ha avuto di recente un incontro con i suoi legali. Questo è stato ritardato per quasi due ore, e, infine, gli sono stati concessi soli cinque minuti per parlare con il suo avvocato. Il colloquio sarebbe dovuto durare 2 ore. Gli è stato detto che sarebbe stato accusato di aggressione, e  sette avvocati in totale sono stati scortati via dal carcere.
Damian insieme d altri due (Seán McConville e Gary Toman) hanno trascorso 27 mesi nel carcere di Maghaberry, in attesa di processo.
Il Repubblicano Sinn Féin chiede la fine degli atteggiamenti vendicativi da parte degli agenti carcerari, e anche la fine dei fin troppo comuni e osceni lunghi periodi delle detenzioni senza processo.

A Republican prisoner in Maghaberry was refused medical attention.
Last Sunday, a Republican Prisoner in Maghaberry Gaol (Brian McAllister) dislocated his shoulder. As he was in severe pain, he requested medical help. However, this request was initially refused. The prisoner was placed in a wheelchair and brought into a room. He was kept there for around an hour and warned that if he kept on complaining then a search squad would be sent in to sort him out.
Eventually a doctor was brought in. The doctor they sent, however, was an eye specialist and was therefore unable to help. After another three hours he was removed to a Belfast hospital.
Another prisoner (Damian McKenna) was recently due a legal visit. This was delayed for nearly two hours, and eventually he was permitted just five minutes to speak to his solicitor. The legal visit had been due to last for two hours. He was told that he would be charged with assault, and in total seven solicitors were escorted from the gaol.
Damian along with two others (Seán McConville and Gary Toman) have spent 27 months in Maghaberry Gaol awaiting trial.
Republican Sinn Féin demands and end to the vindictiveness on the part of the screws, and also an end to the all too common obscene lengths of remands without trial.
