Respinta la richiesta di libertà su cauzione presentata da Michael Campbell, attualmente detenuto a Vilnius con l’accusa di contrabbando di armi per il Real IRA.
Michael Campbell, 36, di Dundalk (Louth co.) aveva fatto richiesta di libertà provvisoria in attesa del processo, per il quale non è ancora stata stabilita una data.
Un portavoce del inistero della Giustizia lituano, ha però dichiarato che l’uomo dovrà restare in stato di custodia cautelare nel carcere di  Lukiskiu.
Gli avvocati di Cambpell continuano ad asserire la falsità dell’accusa sostenendo invece che quando il loro cliente è stato arrestato (sulla base di indagini coordinate dai servizi di intelligence lituano, irlandese e britannico), stava cercando di contrabbandare sigarette.
In Lituania, il tentativo di ottenere armi illegalmente può essere punito con una pena fino a otto anni e la pena per il reato di sostegno al terrorismo, può arrivare fino a 20 anni.

An Irishman charged with trying to buy arms for dissident republicans has been refused bail by a court in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius.
Michael Campbell, 36, from Dundalk, County Louth, had applied for bail pending his trial, for which a date has yet to be set.
However, a spokeswoman for Lithuanian Justice Ministry said he would remain in custody in Lukiskiu Prison.
Laywers for Mr Campbell deny he was trying to buy arms for the Real IRA.
They said that he had been trying to buy cigarettes, not arms and explosives, when he was arrested last January and had been set up by Lithuanian, British and Irish intelligence services.
Attempting to obtain weapons illegally carries a sentence of up to eight years in Lithuania, and supporting terrorism 20 years.
