Stephen Carroll murder: Detectives granted extra week to question suspects (Belfast Telegraph)
Police investigating the shooting of Constable Stephen Carroll have been given more time to question two men in connection with the murder.
The 17-year-old and 37-year-old were arrested by police last Tuesday, the day after Constable Carroll was shot dead while attending a call in Craigavon.
Officers were yesterday granted a seven day extension to question the men.
In total 11 people are being held over the killings, four of them in connection with the barracks shootings of two soldiers and seven in connection with Constable Carroll’s murder.
Two guns were seized on Monday night by police close to the spot where he was shot.
The seizure was followed by disturbances involving up to 30 youths who threw stones and bottles at police in the neighbouring Meadowbrook, Pinebank and Moyraverty areas of Craigavon.
A St Patrick’s Day parade planned for Lurgan was also cancelled yesterday amid the continuing tensions.
The decision was taken on Monday night at a meeting of St Peter’s GAA club, which organises the event.
In a statement, the club said the “scenes of violence and destruction in Lurgan and Craigavon within the last seven days have created considerable anxiety and concern within the local community”.
