GARDA SOTTO PRESSIONE PER I FUNERALI ‘PARAMILITARI’ DI ALAN RYAN

Garda under pressure over RIRA funeral in Dublin (NewsLetter)

PRESSURE is mounting on police in Dublin to make arrests following a paramilitary-style funeral in the city on Saturday.

A volley of shots was fired over the coffin of dissident republican Alan Ryan as his remains were removed from his Donaghmede home ahead of the funeral service.

Real IRA leader Ryan was shot dead in nearby Clongriffin last week in a suspected organised crime gang assassination. There have been no arrests to date despite assurances from the Garda that an investigation is ongoing.

The Garda’s low-key response to the paramilitary display in the Republic’s capital has been widely criticised.

Media commentator Kevin Myers claimed that “authority over an entire estate in Dublin was yielded to a terrorist organisation,” while gardai watched on.

A large number of well-known dissident republicans crossed the border to attend the 32-year-old’s funeral.

A Garda spokesman said they were “investigating an incident which occurred at a housing estate in Donaghmede on Saturday 8th September 2012”.

In a statement, the spokesman said: “At approximately 9.30am a number of shots were fired into the air as a coffin was being removed from a house at Grange Abbey Drive. There was nobody injured, or property damaged during the incident.”

He added: “An examination of the scene has taken place and incident room has been established at Clontarf Garda Station. No arrests have been made and inquiries are ongoing.”
