PSNI officers came under attack from youths throwing missiles – including bricks and blast bombs -as they dealt with a suspect object close to the Lismore roundabout.
There are no reports of injuries.
During the alert, which began shortly before 2pm on Saturday, a cordon line put in place by police was removed by youths.
A number of homes were evacuated in the Lismore Manor area and the road between Drumbeg and Ardowen was closed. It has since re-opened.
Earlier, police were forced to issue an appeal for the community’s support as they dealt with the suspect device.
A police spokesperson said the PSNI requested “the support of all of those with influence to advise the youths of the damage they are causing and the danger they are putting themselves and others in.”
“Police would also ask parents to speak to their children and keep them away from the cordon points for their own safety.”
