North Belfast alert ‘deliberate hoax’ (UTV)

A man has been arrested after a major security alert in north Belfast was declared a deliberate hoax, a police spokesperson said.
Up to 40 premises, including 10 businesses were evacuated and a total of 20 homes were also evacuated during the overnight period.
The security alert was sparked on Tuesday afternoon after police revealed local charity, the Samaritans, received a claim that a device was abandoned in the area on Monday night.
During the major security operation two controlled explosions were carried out by Army Technical Officers.
No device was found.
Superintendent Amanda Cooke said: “Whilst I would apologise for the obvious inconvenience this caused, police cannot and will not take risks with the lives of people in our community.
“Had there been a device, there could have been devastating consequences had it exploded.
A man in his 30s has been arrested under terrorism legislation in connection with the hoax call and is continuing to assist police with their enquiries at Antrim Serious Crime Suite.
Inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
Superintendent Cooke added: “Once again our community has been disrupted and the lives of residents put at risk by a cowardly element intent on causing as much disruption as they can.
“They have no regard for who may be affected by their actions and as a community we should be looking to blame this disruption on the person or persons who made the call claiming a device had been left in the area”.
“The people who carry out these acts are not part of the society within which the majority of people of Northern Ireland wish to live”.
“This complex operation has tied up resources in this local area, officers who should be out serving the local community, delivering the level of community policing the people in this area want,” she said.
The area has now been made safe and any road closures have been lifted.
Local pensioner Una O’Halaron was forced out of her home overnight during the alert, she said: “There’s been an awful lot of disruption to people. The chemist, local shops and a taxi place had to all close. It was just terrible”.
The incident happened after a number of shots were fired in the Glenview Street area of Oldpark on Monday night.
No-one was injured but one eyewitness, who didn’t want to be named, said he was in the street with his children when the gunman appeared.
