Appeal for restraint during Boys’ parade (Derry Journal)

DUP MLA Willie Hay has appealed to people attending next week’s Apprentice Boys parade not to react to “provocation”.
The assemblyman made the comments after he and DUP MP Gregory Campbell met with senior police officers in Derry on Friday to discuss concerns over possible disruption of next Saturday’s parade by dissident republicans.
The DUP delegation also spoke to G District commander Stephen Martin over fears that the PSNI had insufficient resources to deal with any potential trouble.
The meeting followed the publication of plans by the 32 County Sovereignty Group to stage a white-line protest close to the parade route.
Mr Hay appealed to those attending the Apprentice Boys’ parade to act with restraint.
He said: “If there is a white-line picket on behalf of prisoners I think it’s important that people coming to the parade behave with dignity and don’t react to any provocation whatever direction it’s coming from.
He added that it was important that politicians and community leaders do whatever they can, publicly and privately, to lower tensions in the run up to the parade.
Mr Hay said that during the meeting, the senior police officers went into detail about how they would police the situation on the day. He added that he was confident the police could cope with whatever incidents may occur.
