Eirigi, come già riportato ieri, prende le distanze dagli uomini arrestati negli ultimi giorni dal PSNI.
Nello specifico Colin Duffy, secondo quando dichiarato, non apparterrebbe più ad Eirigi da tre settimane. Duffy è stato arresto lo scorso sabato nella sua casa di Lurgan, per il sospetto di un suo coinvolgimento nell’omicidio dei 2 soldati britannici, avvenuto sabato 7 marzo.
Paul Duffy, fratello di Colin, ha attribuito gran parte delle responsabilità dell’arresto, alla demonizzazione che i politici ed alcuni media hanno fatto del nome di Colin.
“Colin è un repubblicano e non ha di che vergognarsi, ma sicuramente non è un membro del Real IRA o del Continuity IRA”.
Paul Duffy, ha dichiarato che l’arresto del fratello sarebbe anche legato alle osservazioni formulate lo scorso anno, in cui Colin affermò che gli attacchi contro le forze di polizia, sono un sintomo di opposizione nazionalista al PSNI ed ha aggiunto “Colin non ha parlato in pubblico in merito agli attentati della scorsa settimana perché non è un membro del Continuity o del Real IRA, per cui non ha sentito la necessità di giustificarsi”.

The Eirigi pressure group last night distanced itself from prominent Lurgan republican Colin Duffy, pictured, after his arrest in connection with the murder of two British army soldiers.
However, Duffy’s family last night said he was not linked to the killings and claimed that he was being “demonised”.
Yesterday a spokesman for Eirigi said Duffy, pictured right, previously a leading member of the group, left the organisation three weeks ago.
The group said that none of the four men being questioned in connection with the murders of British soldiers Patrick Azimkar and Mark Quinsey were members.
On Saturday Duffy was arrested at his home in Lurgan in connection with the double murder.
His brother Paul last night said he had played no part in the killings.
“In the week leading up to his arrest Colin was demonised by politicians and some sections of the media,” he said.
“His concern is that his name had been bandied about and this has directly led to this arrest.
“Colin is a republican and he is not ashamed of that but he is definitely not a member of the Real IRA or the Continuity IRA.”
Paul Duffy said his brother’s arrest was linked to comments made last year in which he claimed that attacks on the police were a symptom of nationalist opposition to the PSNI.
“Colin was a member of Eirigi. He stood up and saw the brutality and spoke out for the community,” he said.
“What has happened since is that politicians have been referring back to that incident and linking him to these attacks.
Mr Duffy defended his brother’s decision not to publicly condemn last week’s murder of PSNI officer Stephen Carroll.
“Colin did not speak publicly about the attacks during the week because he is not a member of the Continuity IRA or the Real IRA, so he did not feel the need to explain himself,” he said.
“His view was that it should be left to the people who did this to explain themselves.”
Police were attacked by rioters during the operation to arrest Colin Duffy on Saturday.
Disturbances continued in Craigavon last night with one car being set on fire near the Drumbeg estate.
Police were last night continuing to question eight men and one woman in connection with the three killings.
One of those arrested is Declan McGlinchey, whose INLA father Dominic was shot dead in 1994.
In 2006 the 32-year-old was charged with possession of explosives but the charges were later dropped after concerns were raised about the forensic evidence used to link Mr McGlinchey to the bomb.
