ST. PATRICK’S DAY, RIOT LEALISTA A SOUTH BELFAST

Officer injured in clashes with flag protestors (News Letter)

A POLICE officer was injured and one man arrested during violent clashes in south Belfast on Sunday evening.

According to the PSNI a crowd of masked youths blocked the Donegall Road close to Sandy Row at around 8pm and attacked police with bricks and bottles.

“Sporadic disorder flared between 8pm and 10pm with protestors burning bins on the road and carrying out sustained attacks on police,” said the police spokesman.

“Following a robust policing operation calm was restored to the area at around 10pm. One police officer sustained minor injuries and an 18 year old man was arrested. He has since been released pending a report to the PPS.

“Detectives from the Op Dulcet Team have been clear from the outset that there will be consequences for individuals who engage in illegal activity.

“The PSNI have and will continue to make people amenable to the courts and will be carrying out further enquiries to identify those involved in the disorder.”
