A number of bricks and bottles have been thrown at police in Ballymena during a Union flag protest.

It is understood that over 100 protestors have gathered in the Linenhall Street area of the town, at the rear of the town’s Council building where a meeting is ongoing.

One person who spoke to the News Letter, said a number of bricks and bottles had been thrown at police. A PSNI spokesperson advised motorists to avoid the area.

Meanwhile, the Stormont Executive has been recalled on Monday to discuss the ongoing unrest over the new Union flag policy at Belfast City Hall.

In a statement released on Thursday evening from OFMDFM it was stated: “The First Minister Rt Hon Peter D. Robinson MLA and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP MLA have this evening spoken to the Speaker of the Assembly to ask him to bring forward the Plenary sitting of the Assembly on Monday 10 December in order to discuss an agreed motion in relation to recent disturbances.”
