PIPE BOMB A DERRY

Pipe bomb attack on Co. Derry home (U TV)
Gavin Nixon believes he is being victimised because of his past involvement with drugs.
A couple with two young children who were targeted in a pipe bomb attack on their Londonderry home say they want to leave the city for “a better life” in England.
He told UTV: “We’re going to get out of here, we have no choice.
“I’m too frightened to leave my children and partner alone. I’m being victimised because of my past.”
Caoimhe McConnell, who was with her partner in their Hawthorne Drive home when the attack happened, said she fears for her children after the incident.
“I don’t want to be in this house any more, I want out of this house,” she said. “If I had the money I’d take them to England for a better life. I don’t want them growing up in this town.
“I was really really shook up,” she said,”but I’m afraid for the children more than anything.”
Decribing the attack, which took place at around 1pm on Friday, she said: “It happened so quick.
“All we heard was a hissing sound then a big explosion. There was smoke everywhere, and my partner had to go out through the window and kick the door in.
“If there had been a fire that was our only escape, we could have burned to death.
No-one was injured in the attack, which the couple are blaming on a group known as Republic Action Against Drugs for the attack.
SDLP Derry City Councillor Mark H Durkan has said children’s lives have been put at risk: “This is a cowardly and despicable attack on innocent children and indeed all the people of Hawthorne Drive.
“Worryingly the pipe bomb exploded inside the house and has caused extensive shrapnel damage to the house and to neighbouring properties.”
