Dissident republicans send bullet in post to council staff (Belfast Telegraph)
Extra security measures have been introduced by Belfast City Council after employees received death threats from dissident republicans, it has emerged.
The workers, who are based at a civic amenity site in the Shankill Road area, received a bullet in the post.
It is understood that members of a group calling themselves the North Belfast Republican Brigade are responsible.
Officers from the PSNI’s Serious Crime Branch have been called in to investigate and the council has been briefed on measures that should be taken to protect staff.
Belfast City Council said it does not comment on individual incidents of this nature but a spokeswoman added that the council’s main priority “is always the safety and wellbeing of all our employees”
She added: “We have put measures in place, with the agreement of staff and police, to ensure continued safety of all staff.”
The PSNI said it would not discuss the security of individuals but added that if officers receive information that a person’s life may be at risk “we will inform them accordingly”.
UUP councillor Jim Rodgers condemned the threats and said he hoped it did not escalate into a “tit-for-tat” situation.
“We’ve had these problems in the past during the worst days of the Troubles,” he said.
“I would hope the police get to the bottom of who is behind these incidents.
“Our staff in the council do a tremendous job and these are frontline workers and for something like this to happen causes great worry and distress.
“Somebody must know who is involved and I would appeal for people to assist the police in any way.”
DUP councillor for the area William Humphrey said he was disturbed by the threats.
“This is absolutely deplorable. I condemn any such actions. People out delivering frontline services should be allowed to do their job unhindered. These council workers are doing their best to make this city better for us all to live in,” he added.
The threat from dissident republicans remains substantial with both security forces and civilians at risk.
Last year traffic wardens were forced to withdraw from west Belfast following threats from dissidents.
