MEP calls for action on Palestinian prisoners (Derry Sinn Fein)

Sinn Féin MEP for Foyle Bairbre de Brún has called for action in support of Palestinian political prisoners being held by Israel as the European Parliament accepted a resolution co-signed by the Sinn Féin MEP on the plight of Palestinian prisoners
The resolution was co-signed by Irish MEPs Bairbre de Brun, Marian Harkin, Proinsias de Rossa and Brian Crowley as well as a number of MEPs from across the EU. .
Speaking from Brussels Ms de Brún commented:
“I welcome the recent releases but they should be seen in the overall context whereby some 11,000 Palestinians including women and children are being held by Israel. Some are awaiting trial and some are detained without trial in what is called ‘administrative detention’ where a military order allows for internment without trial for up to six months, which can be renewed indefinitely.
‘Our European Parliament resolution makes clear that any upgrade in relations between the EU and Israel should be linked to Israel’s compliance with all obligations under international law. The European Parliament also calls on Israel to guarantee that minimum standards of detention are respected. hope that politicians and human rights groups in the North of Ireland can also contact the Israeli authorities, the European Commission and the European Council to add their voice to those of the MEPs asking for the Israeli government to meet international standards in respect of those detained.”
