New Police Ombudsman named (UTV)
Chief Inspector of Criminal Justice, Dr Michael Maguire, has been named as the new Police Ombudsman.
Dr Maguire, who held the CJI post from 2008, will replace outgoing ombudsman Al Hutchinson, who stepped down earlier this year.
A dozen candidates were interviewed for the job in February and March before a final decision was reached by First and Deputy First Minister Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness.
Dr Maguire was previously a management consultant with the PA Management Group and chairman of the NI division of the Institute of Directors between 2004 and 2006.
He will take over a staff of over 150 at the watchdog, which was established in 1998 to provide an independent means of handling complaints against the police.
His annual salary will be in the region of £128,000.
Mr Hutchison had been Police Ombudsman since 2007, when he replaced Nuala O’Loan. His resignation followed a series of critical reports into the workings of the office.
