PSNI Rehiring To Be Investigated (4NI)
The PSNI’s hiring of retired officers as civilian staff on temporary contracts is to be investigated.
The Audit Office has made the move to investigate after a BBC report revealed that hundreds of retired police officers have been re-employed.
It is understood that these officers would have left the service with generous redundancy packages.
The PSNI have defended their decision to re-employ ex-officers and responded to the investigation by the spending watchdog. They said that the experience of former officers is valuable and that appointments of such officers is only a temporary measure.
Three hundred and four retired police officers are currently back working for the PSNI according to The Policing Board. Two former senior police officers called on the Audit Office to investigate the rehiring process at the end of January.
