MLAs reject Pat Finucane inquiry motion (BBC News Northern Ireland)
MLAs have voted against a motion calling on the British government to establish a judicial inquiry into the death of lawyer Pat Finucane.
The SDLP tabled a motion noting the government’s acceptance of collusion by state agencies on Monday.
The killing of the Belfast solicitor by the loyalist UDA/UFF remains one of the most controversial in 30 years of violence.
He was shot dead in front of his family at his home in 1989.
The SDLP’s Alban Maginness said that the need to know the extent of collusion by state agencies with paramilitary groups, and in particular whether collusion was government policy, meant that a judicial review of the Finucane case was important.
An amendment proposed by Sinn Fein sought to establish this judicial inquiry within the next three months.
The DUP’s issue of a valid petition of concern required cross-community support for the motion and postponed the vote until the following day, when both were voted down.
Mr Finucane was shot 14 times as he sat eating a Sunday meal at home. His wife was wounded in the attack, which the couple’s three children witnessed.
In October 2011 his family rejected Prime Minister David Cameron’s proposal of a review conducted by a QC of the case notes of his murder.
